Padauk is a vibrant and durable hardwood native to tropical regions of Africa and Southeast Asia. It is renowned for its striking reddish orange to deep red heartwood, which darkens over time to a rich, reddish-brown colour with exposure to light. The grain is typically interlocked or wavy, often displaying unique and appealing figuring patterns, while its medium to coarse texture gives the wood a natural, satin-like finish when polished.
Highly regarded for its strength and workability, Padauk is used extensively in fine furniture making, cabinetry, flooring, and decorative woodturning. It is also a popular choice for crafting musical instruments, including drum shells and guitar bodies, thanks to its excellent acoustic properties. The wood is easy to machine and shape, and it takes stain and finishes well, enhancing its vibrant colour and smooth texture.
More Information
Padauk is known for its excellent durability and resistance to abrasion, moisture, and insect damage. Its stability under varying environmental conditions makes it a reliable choice for both indoor and outdoor applications, including structural components and high-traffic surfaces.
As one of the most visually striking exotic hardwoods, Padauk continues to be a favoured material among woodworkers and craftsmen. Sustainable harvesting practices are essential to ensure its availability for future generations. With its eye-catching colour, workability, and resilience, Padauk remains a top choice for artisans and manufacturers seeking a unique and durable wood.
