About This Timber Pen
All of my wooden pens are made from recycled, repurposed or sustainable timber. Further information regarding the type of wood this pen is made from will be contained in the information sheet. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Any wood species, that is not listed as being recycled or repurposed comes from sustainable stock and is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Wych Elm wood, (sometimes also known as Scots Elm), is prized by craftsmen for its colouring, its striking grain, its ‘partridge-breast’ or ‘catspaw’ markings, and when worked, its occasional iridescent greenish sheen or ‘bloom’.
It is one of many species of Elm, and the wood is strong and durable with a tight, twisted grain, and is resistant to water. Can be a challenge to work because of interlocked grain, especially on quartersawn surfaces. When using a plane, it can cause tear out and/or fuzzy surfaces and has poor dimensional stability. Glues, stains, and finishes well. Responds well to steam bending and holds nails and screws well. It has been used in decorative turning, and to make boat parts, furniture, wheel hubs, wooden water pipes, and floorboards.
Wych Elm is highly susceptible to Dutch elm disease, a fungal disease which has devastated populations of elms since it arrived in the UK in the 1960s.
