A really unique fountain pen, the body of which is made from a rare Brazilian Mahogany, which is now unavailable to buy from timber yards due to rarity. This mahogany I purchased in the 1970’s to make a clock from but never had the opportunity to complete it. The pen which  has been segmented with a ring of Beech in the nib section and the cap section. It is completed with chrome plated fittings that compliment this timber making a modern looking pen. The finished pen is “pillared” so that the cap can be screwed on the back of the pen to extend it for anyone who likes to use a longer pen. The nib has an iridium point and comes in a black velveteen pouch. The pen being sold is the one in the picture and ready to post.

About The Timber

Brazilian Mahogany has a straight, fine, and even grain, and is relatively free of voids and pockets. Its reddish-brown colour darkens over time and displays a reddish sheen when polished. It has excellent workability and is very durable. Historically, the tree’s girth allowed for wide boards from traditional mahogany species. These properties make it a favourable wood for crafting cabinets and furniture.

Beech is typically a pale cream colour, sometimes with a pink or brown hue surfaces which tend to be very plain, while quartersawn surfaces exhibit a silvery fleck pattern. The grain is straight, with a fine to medium uniform texture. Moderate natural lustre. Overall it has good workability and machines well and also turns well. Beech also responds superbly to steam-bending.

Each pen is made using sustainable or recycled timber and top quality components. Once turned and sanded, to give the best possible protection it has up to ten coats of finish and then a polish. It comes complete in a velveteen pouch, full instructions on the care of the pen and a certificate of authenticity, confirming that I have turned the pen personally and in most cases the date it was constructed.

This pen is constructed from timber. Being a natural material each piece is unique in colour and figuring, which will slightly change colour and darken in time. The pen may be smooth to the touch or you may be able to feel the grain, blemishes and faults in the wood under the finish. Pens that are really smooth, with no blemishes are made of plastic!
