About the Timber
The majority of people have never heard of spalted timber, but many woods can spalt with Beech being one of the most common. Spalting is a term used to describe the process by which certain fungi grow usually on dead or fallen trees and after colonizing the wood via travelling up the wood cells from the ends or from broken off branches, leave a most attractive pattern. It is sought after by woodworkers for the infinite number of patterns and colour variations that it can produce from subtle colour changes to really impressive variations.
Usually the wood is quite soft and impossible to turn, so it has to be prepared for use by having the air removed in a vacuum chamber and the spaces filled with a stabilising solution. After this has been done it then has to be placed in an over for several hours. The whole process can take many days.

Each pen is made using sustainable or recycled timber and top quality components. Once turned and sanded, to give the best possible protection it has up to ten coats of finish and then a polish. It comes complete in a velvet sleeve, full instructions on the care of the pen and a certificate of authenticity, confirming that I have turned the pen personally and in most cases the date it was constructed.
This pen is constructed from timber. Being a natural material each piece is unique in colour and figuring, which will slightly change colour and darken in time. The pen may be smooth to the touch or you may be able to feel the grain, blemishes and faults in the wood under the finish. Pens that are really smooth, with no blemishes are made of plastic!
