Medlar Fountain Pen
This is a lovely Fountain Pen made from Medlar with Gun Metal fittings. This particular piece is from a tree that was cut down in 2022 and was going to be burnt.
The finished pen is “pillared” meaning that the cap can be screwed on the back of the pen to extend it for anyone who likes to use a longer pen.
The nib has an iridium point and the pen comes in a black velveteen pouch (or the chance to have a black velvet pen box with white and blue interior as an added extra), three ink cartridges to get you started and a converter so that you can use bottled ink.
Please make sure that you inspect all of the pictures (click on them to enlarge) as this is the pen that is for sale and the one you will receive.

About the Timber
The Medlar tree or European Medlar is a fruit tree that produces a fruit called Medlar. Although its Latin name references Germany (Mespilus Germanica), it originates in Asia Minor and Southeast Europe, and it was brought to Germany by the Romans.
It was originally cultivated approximately three thousand years ago in the Caspian Sea region. At about 700 B.C. it arrived in Greece, and then reached Rome around 200 B.C. It became an important fruit crop during the Roman Empire and the Middle Age, mainly due to its medicinal properties relating to intestinal health.
The wood of the Medlar tree grows very slowly, which makes it dense and hard, but flexible at the same time. This makes it very special, because most hard woods generally are not flexible and do break. As a result, it is a very appropriate type of wood for making walking sticks.
Under ideal circumstances, the deciduous plant grows up to 8 metres (26 feet) tall. Generally, it is shorter and more shrub-like than tree-like. With a lifespan of 30–60 years, the tree is rather short-lived. Its bark is greyish brown with deep vertical cracks forming rectangular plates that tend to lift off.
The wood has a fine texture but is very hard. It has a white, slightly pink-tinted sapwood. The core is brownish. The annual rings are clearly visible.

More Details
Each pen is made using sustainable or recycled timber and top quality components. Once turned and sanded, to give the best possible protection it has up to ten coats of finish and then a polish. It comes complete in a velvet sleeve, full instructions on the care of the pen. Also a certificate of authenticity, confirming that I have turned the pen personally and in most cases the date it was constructed.
This pen is constructed from timber. Being a natural material each piece is unique in colour and figuring, which will slightly change colour and darken in time. The pen may be smooth to the touch or you may be able to feel the grain, blemishes and faults in the wood under the finish. Pens that are really smooth, with no blemishes are made of plastic!
