About the Pen Body
I make my wood and resin pen blanks by first mixing clear resin with a coloured dye to obtain the colours I want. After about three or four hours it is now ready to be poured into a mould. The reason for leaving the mixture to thicken is that, if there is one or more colours and they were poured straight away, the colours would mix into one colour.
By leaving them to thicken keeping the different coloured resins separate when they are poured. Although there is no guarantee that this will happen as expected. Before the mixture is poured the pieces of timber are placed into the mould and then the resin poured over them. A cover is placed on the mould to stop that wood pieces floating to the surface.
After about a week the resin has cured and can be released from the mould. The block can then be cut to size and is ready to turn on the lathe.
