Luxury Laburnum Fountain Pen

Imagine writing with a pen made from a tree that was growing in Prehistoric times in Eastern England (The Fens) when hunter gathers were just starting to move to farming, following techniques that were being used in Europe.

This is a Rare Chance to obtain a top of the range, fountain pen in a piece of Bog Oak that was growing sometime between 3000 and 8000 years ago. It has the highest quality fittings that, with care, should last a lifetime. The fittings are in Titanian Gold Plate with Black Chrome Plated Centre Ring and Cabochon making a stunning pen that would grace any desk or office. A real pleasure to write with.

This stylish writing implement is fitted with a high-quality Beaufort Medium bi-coloured gold-plated nib which writes really smoothly. In addition, it comes complete with ink cartridges, a converter so that bottled ink can be used and in a velvet pouch for protection (or black velvet pen box for an extra charge). This pen is not pillared so the cap cannot be screwed on the back.

Please check all of the pictures as the pen being sold is the one in the picture and ready to post. Please note that wood is a natural material and can have faults which can sometimes be felt even after numerous coats of finish.

About the Timber

All of my wooden pens are made from recycled, repurposed or sustainable timber. Further information regarding the type of wood this pen is made from will be contained in the information sheet. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Any wood species, that is not listed as being recycled or repurposed comes from sustainable stock and is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

When humans were leaving the stone age and becoming hunter gatherers, and started farming, the trees these pens are made from were growing in Eastern England. In an area known as the fens.

Bog oak is produced from trees that fell into bogs thousands of years ago. It is usually 3,000 to 8,000 years old, preserved in oxygen-poor, acidic peat bogs in the UK and Ireland. Iron salts react with tannins over millennia, staining it from deep brown to black, the wood often has a dramatic, dark hue resembling ebony, yet it retains visible, fine grain structures. Once excavated, it must be dried slowly over 2–4 years to prevent damage and splitting.

Although it is considered very rare, with less than 1% of oak trees historically falling into such conditions to become bog oak, it is fine to use it today as the trees fell naturally and were not harvested.

The wood is far denser and harder than ordinary oak due to mineral infiltration, making it excellent for detailed carving, although it can be brittle and prone to splitting if not dried properly. Traditionally used for fuel, it is now used for high-end furniture, musical instruments, jewellery, and sculpture
