About the Timber
All of my wooden pens are made from recycled, repurposed or sustainable timber. Further information regarding the type of wood this pen is made from will be contained in the information sheet. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Any wood species, that is not listed as being recycled or repurposed comes from sustainable stock and is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
This wood is also known as Zebrawood due to the colouration of brown or cream with dark blackish brown streaks vaguely resembling a zebra’s stripes. Depending on whether the wood is flatsawn or quartersawn, the stripes can be either chaotic and wavy if flatsawn. If it is quartersawn the grain cane be somewhat uniform with the stripes being various widths.
The wood has a fairly coarse texture, the grain can often be flet under the finish, and open pores with the Grain usually wavy or interlocked. The wood saws well but can be very difficult to plane or surface due to the prevalence of interlocking grain. Tear out is common. Zebrawood glues and finishes well, though a transparent pore filler may be necessary for the large open pores which occur on both dark and light surfaces. The grain can sometimes be felt through the finish. It is becoming a rare timber due to the decline in its natural range.
