IRISH BOG OAK FOUNTAIN PEN

When humans were leaving the stone age and becoming hunter gatherers, and started farming, the trees these pens are made from were growing in Ireland. This is a lovely fountain pen which is made from a piece of Prehistoric Oak with Chrome Plated Fittings giving a nicely balanced pen and a joy to use. A pleasure to write with.

In addition, it comes complete with ink cartridges, a converter so that bottled ink can be used and in a velvet pouch for protection (or black velvet pen box for an extra charge).

Please be sure to check all the pictures as this is the pen you are buying, and it is ready to post.

About This Timber Pen

All of my wooden pens are made from recycled, repurposed or sustainable timber. Further information regarding the type of wood this pen is made from will be contained in the information sheet. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Any wood species, that is not listed as being recycled or repurposed comes from sustainable stock and is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Bog oak is produced from trees that fell into bogs thousands of years ago. It is usually 3,000 to 8,000 years old, preserved in oxygen-poor, acidic peat bogs in the UK and Ireland. Iron salts react with tannins over millennia, staining it from deep brown to black, the wood often has a dramatic, dark hue resembling ebony, yet it retains visible, fine grain structures. Once excavated, it must be dried slowly over 2–4 years to prevent damage and splitting.

Although it is considered very rare, with less than 1% of oak trees historically falling into such conditions to become bog oak, it is fine to use it today as the trees fell naturally and were not harvested.

The wood is far denser and harder than ordinary oak due to mineral infiltration, making it excellent for detailed carving, although it can be brittle and prone to splitting if not dried properly. Traditionally used for fuel, it is now used for high-end furniture, musical instruments, jewellery, and sculpture.
